The sun was beating down upon the naked rocks as summer exacted it's vengeance on the floods that had ravished the lands so many months before. High in the blue sky a few infected vultures circled, casting their ominous shadows to the semi-wasteland below. Sawyer moved carefully over the baking rocks, mindful of bramble patches and loose stones. It had seemed like ages since she set foot on the top of the canyon. She had met a few challengers on this, initiating them into the an infected pack of wolves despite her small size. She was lucky two come out not infected. The thought of the pack left a bitter smell on her fur. The pack was nothing now, it amounted to just as much as the bleached bones that she had seen coming in.

The flood waters had receded, leaving dessicated corpses in it's wake. Luckily the sun had dried most of them out, or the scavengers had rendered them to the blinding bones she had grown accustomed to. The age female knew that there were pleasant spots in the territory. Getting there was the challenge, but it kept unwanted intruders at bay for the most part. Her pelt shone in the sun. Her paws were covered once again with the red dirt of the territory. Her cold golden eyes scanned the territory once more from her vantage point. To be fair she was not really a pack wolf at heart. Thoughts of a certain rogue male had often visited her thoughts, to tease him more she would have to be out from the burdens of responsibility.

She would be happy to be out of the desert shadow. Her heavy fur baubles moved with her pace as her ears bounced. As far as she could tell the canyon was back to it's glory. She could return to the canyon Sawyer wanted. However she wondered if it would be worth returning.Obligation caused her to turn back away from the ledges of the canyon. She needed to walk away from the territory that was once safe. The waters were back to normal, the prey count seemed plentiful enough if you counted the infected as well. More predators had moved in more than usually. A loud howl came from the Sawyer's month to see if any other wolf was out their.

Quemal moved with a strangely elegant stride, long, limber limbs pounding a silent anthem against the dusty ground, drawn by a silken howl. His gait was smooth, swift, sending swirls of fire across his left side as the hot sun drew the sheen from his coat, his dark blue eyes alight with curiosity. Mismatched ears stood curiously pricked atop his broad skull, coaxed alive by the call.

It wasn't often he came up here. The forests were easier to hunt in, and only half of him was disguised by this bramble-strewn wasteland. Most of its inhabitants were already dead and gone, pale bones left beached by the receding waters of the violent spring melts.

But today, today was different.

Today there was someone, and - ah! If she hadn't been moving, he might have missed her beneath the uncomfortable heatwave. All tan and gold, she was near invisible in the shimmering desert. A lithe little thing, with no obvious deformities; still. He didn't recognise her, and if she wasn't Bloodtail, then she really shouldn't have called.

Perhaps it was lucky for her, that these surroundings offered no disguise for Quemal. Perhaps it was less lucky that the bleak place was a runner's domain. But, hell. He'd be polite. In situations like this, he liked his prey to know that they'd died a fair death, beneath the jaws of a true master of lethality. And it was just that line of thought that slowed his lope to an arching, powerful walk. Head high, but with his tail low, he chose to assert a wary dominance, just in case.

"Well hey there, little miss. I believe you called?"
