PostSubject: Out There Be Monsters [Skoll]   Sun Nov 11, 2012 6:52 pm

An oddly-patterned thing moved through the Crimson Forest, his flaming half-coat no camouflage against what was in actual fact a dense, coniferous place - dark, mostly, but dappled here and there with the thick musk of the night's light pollution. Quemal didn't mind being in the forest at night - there was nothing better to see out in the open, anyway. Stars were a long-distant memory, perhaps not even that - was he only imagining the stories he'd heard in his youth? White spots of glitter amidst rolling waves of utter blackness... yeah. More like lighter patches of smog, where the moonlight almost, but not quite, shone through.

Approaching his home from a hunt, the bulky male moved with the barest hint of a limp from a solid bite to his front right ankle. He wasn't concerned about getting infected - after all, Bloodtails never did - but he did dislike the slight sting that accompanied his easy gait, and the gunk that coated the bottom of his tail.

That was the part he hated most. His clan were so... so very messy, they had little sense of cleanliness beyond the bare minimum. His own coat was far from the borderline-dreadlocks he'd seen upon fierce-looking peers, but a glossy ripple across his body. Apart, of course, from the dripping tail which he held just a little bit away from his body, such that he could keep his hind legs as tidy as possibly. Before his next hunt, he'd clean it - the thought of dipping an already mucky appendage into even more tainted blood was, frankly, disgusting.

Such were his thoughts as the night deafened him with silence. Because the other animals knew not to come here, now. They'd been hunted by one apex predator, and had fled quite haughtily with the rise of the wolves.

"Clever things, you."

Round ears perked on his head when Onai heard something scuffle along the dappled ground. He lowered his head, in an attempt to see what might be hidden. "What am I doing..." Onai moaned, scaring whatever it was, away. He was fairly new to the territory and fumbling around the forest at night probably wasn't the greatest idea... He shook his head and walked to a tree, stepping on a few leaves and a branch every so often. He was scoping out the territory all day and still got lost often. Onai sighed, sat down and started grooming his fur, making the black and gray fur blend easily in with the night. He stopped and looked around with his soft blue eyes, the territory looked so different at night.

"Maybe I'll just head to the Crimson community for the night... " he sighed discouraged. He stood up when he scented something that could be a potential meal, "Er, I guess after this." Onai trotted again more carefully avoiding the leaves and branches, that always seemed to slip under his paws. He slowed and paid more attention to what he smelled, blood? he thought, was it injured? He lowered his head, with his round ears up, and being more cautious, peered from a few bushes. His eyes widened and he jumped back a little. Realizing the slight sound he just made he froze. Did... Is that... he thought, breathing slow and shallow.

Maybe that bright wolf didn't hear me... he thought. After all it was night time and he wouldn't be able to see as well... The wolf's flaming pelt was bright, or at least half of him was. Onais pelt blended much easier, so maybe he didn't see him either. Scent on the other hand... It was just a small sound anyway, I would probably just shake it off, he tried to calmed himself silently.

His fur rippled slightly, as his round ears stayed stiff and perky. His blue eyes wide, he thought to himself, even if blood is shed, at least I'm not already injured... He reassured himself. Onai was rather... oblivious of the other packs customs...

ooc. first post ever!? it's lovely <3 let's get the ball rolling now! Excited

ic. When everything was silent, any noise was deafening. Que hadn't noticed the flutter of the other male's paws beneath his own steady steps, but a distinct crunch off to one side was unmistakeable. Ears flicked up and the burning wolf slowed his stride, sucking in a long breath through his nose. The stench of the blood that coated him was masking, but no - there. Halting and spinning in the direction of the companion he had yet to see, a wide, unpleasant grin slicing across his maw.

In the night-dappled shadow, the stranger would have been difficult to spot were it not for an unusually blue gleam in what was yet a musky half-light. Eyes. Much lighter than Quemal's own - and oh! So very lost, and innocent.

"I see you, friend." The beast rumbled deeply, merrily, melodiously as the temptations began to whirl through his gut. Now, what to do with this one? He couldn't see enough of it to decide whether it was symptomed and worthy of immediate death, but then the mere fact of its' shy shadow-stalking meant that it was not Bloodtail - and, by extension, it was indeed fair game. Maybe he'd just chase it down to the city and see what happened. Or maybe he'd befriend it and eat it later. Or maybe (and this was his favourite game) he'd simply intimidate it with brash claims and a rough swagger, leaving it to spread his notoriety across the lands.

Yeah, right, because he had notoriety. Now that thought had him stifling a snort of disgruntled laughter. A mere initiate to the pack he'd dedicated his life to, that made him quite the opposite of notorious.

I'll not be the damned whipping boy any more.

"Come out from the shadows, little thing!"

He unconsciously shifted his weight, taking an accidental step. He studied the ground that seemed to scowl at his paws. He could bolt, and try to lose, or hope to lose, the dog that the malicious voice belonged to. Despite the urge to run he stepped forward slowly keeping his head a bit lower. He now saw the others pelt and face. He kept a large distance, out of respect, but mostly fear. The flaming pelt was actually quite beautiful, but there were no injuries. Then why did he smell blood? He followed his shoulders down to his tail and saw the slight gleam of blood. Who did the blood belong too, was it prey, or maybe, another wolf? He now lost the self confidence he had when he stepped out of the safe, dark, brush. Maybe if he was lucky, he'd pity him and let him run away.

Onai didn't want to speak. He felt like his teeth were melted together from the heat that flowed from his face. He didn't know what to think at this point. There was still the slight chance the wolf could be friendly. It was slim but Onai still hoped. He hated being pushed around like this, it was pretty much the reason why he kept to himself as a loner for so long. Dealing with pushy and aggressive wolves was the one thing he hated the most. It always made him feel so vulnerable and weak. And that feeling in his stomach, it would always tear at his insides. He could already feel claws raking down his back. “I..." he forced himself to squeeze out of his mouth. He could only imagine how pitiful he seemed. He bet vicious over there was just enjoying every second of this. Onai avoided the others eyes, sometimes daring to look at them for just a moment. Onai was definitely the smaller one here...

It was pathetic, really. The little thing was practically trembling - it wasn't even all that little, in the grand scheme of things, but the way it cowered... it annoyed Quemal. It wasn't even going to be fun to torture this one, he was already shitting bricks. So plain, too, but for those eyes.

He'd probably look better painted red. The larger male resisted the urge to snicker at that thought. No. He'd already decided not to kill this one. He was in a much more playful mood today. Perhaps he'd even have the generosity to teach the little whip a thing or two. Some noise escaped from that locked jaw - what now? Was it going to plead for mercy, or something equally dull?

"Spit it out, lad. And for gods' sake, bloody stand up straight."

Quemal's stance, naturally, showed off his heavy figure. Head high above stocky shoulders and tail just a little outstretched, any onlooker might have thought they were watching an alpha-subordinate standoff. That thought pleased him slightly. Being a simple thing, food and power meant a lot to the Bloodtail, and as tonight seemed to be fulfilling both of those requirements, he was in a pretty good mood.

Striding forwards, he pressed himself not quite into the other creature's personal space, frowning as if deep in thought. Not that his thoughts ran all that deep.

"By hell, have some damn pride. What's yer name?"

He snapped his head up, eyes wide after hearing the male speak. Hey at least he was still breathing. Pissing him off was the last thing on his mind. Maybe there would be a tomorrow, and maybe, Onai would still have a tail. Was he trespassing? He didn't smell or hear anything distinguishing their territory, or maybe he did miss something, being totally oblivious. He royally screwed up this time... If Onai got to walk away today, he's got to keep this accident to himself. He looked him in the eyes now. Blue? At this point Onai thought they'd be a firey red. Maybe there's some good ol compassion in those eyes. He almost smiled to himself. Who was he trying to fool.

Onai gritted his teeth when the male took a step. Oh Please don't get closer... His ears bent back and his eyes widened. Onai saw that frown. Great, he was displeased. The larger males voice invaded his ears once again, “I-I'm Onai...” He spoke strongly but quickly trailed off, his eyes jumping around. “Who, are you?" He spoke more confidently this time, and stood a little more boldly. He tail held still and Onai kept his gaze locked on the brightly colored male. He looked at his tail once more, why was there blood... and then it hit him. Bloodtail. Duh. How could he of been so stupid. At least the FCR wasn't totally aggressive towards the Bloodtails. Or maybe they are... he flicked his ear in annoyance with himself. This wolf must be an extremely high rank. His posture, his attitude, it's written all over. Surely he will let him live. Things were starting to look brighter, he could just be in a bad mood, maybe he wasn't naturally mean. He blinked, staying silent, studying the black line on his face.

There was a vague tremor of confidence that promptly vanished beneath the weight of... Onai's terror. There was a set to his jaw indicative of clenched molars - not out of anger, just a stiffening of muscles that kept him upright. Eyes skipped like fleas, left, right, down, finally they agreed to meet Quemal's expectant frown.

"Why I, my friend, am Quemal. But you may call me Master, if you wish."

The frown lifted into a toothy smirk as a flash of realisation hit the intimidated boy. He'd noticed the blood. This both pleased and annoyed Que; he was hoping to bully the frightened thing into a violent retort, you know, just because he could, really. The playground bully would never seriously harm his prey, just bluff and play and laugh.

"Tell me, boy, is there anything worth having you here for? Is there even one little speck of courage in you, or do you quiver like a frightened rabbit all of the time?"

He snapped his teeth playfully on the final word, pressing his paws firmly into the ground and looming, just a little taller, eyes boring steadily into Onai's, noting his flicked ear with expectation.

Come on, you scrawny git, bite me.
